Illuminae

In all honesty,  I figured this would take me a while to finish- all 600 pages of this tome. Not so. Oh my goodness, this was a book like no other I have read and I have read a lot. First- if you decide to read it you must buy a physical copy. NO electronic or audio will do because this book is a work of art. It is the story of Kady and Ezra, a couple who have just broken up as their world is attacked. They are forced to flee to several ships (this is a space tale) and find themselves alone with only each other left. But alas, they are on separate ships. Ezra is commissioned to become a fighter pilot and Kady hides her computer hacking skills from the powers that be, but she is keeping an eye on the command. She doesn't like what she sees. When one of the ships is fired on by their own and the disaster is covered up, Kady uses her hacking skills to find out what is going on. And none of it is pretty. I could go on and on about the terrible things that happen and how Kady and Ezra fight to save others, but you will get to that on your own. It's the style of this book that is spectacular. It is told in memos, blogs, computer conversations. It is told in concrete poetry from an unreliable narrator. It is told in reports and schematics and illustrations. Just gorgeous and clever. I really couldn't put this down. And when I am done typing, will order book two. My only complaint is some of the gray writing on the black pages was almost impossible to read- could be due to my old eyes but that did give me a bit of frustration as I didn't want to miss a word. I can't imagine the planning that must have gone into the creation of this book- kudos to the authors Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. It isn't easy to create something so new and innovative in the book world, but they blew the doors off this one. So try something new and give it a go. Happy reading my friends!

Stalking Jack the Ripper

I love a good historical novel. An intrepid NoDid putting her life in peril to solve a crime. And in this case it is an actual crime she is trying to solve. Audrey Rose is not like other girls her age. For one, she assists her uncle in his medical profession. For two, she has no problem running around the seedy underbelly of London at the same time as Jack the Ripper was doing his work. Audrey Rose attends crime scenes, autopsies and classes at medical school. None of these activities sit well with her father who would like to keep her locked up in the house to keep her safe after her mother's death. But he has problems of his own and is not the best chaperone. Enter Thomas Cresswell, her uncle's assistant and general rogue. The chemistry between the two is striking and they team up to try and solve the Ripper case. Unfortunately for Audrey Rose, she catches the Ripper's attention and must race to find the culprit who she thinks may be her father, or Thomas or... I enjoyed the pictures in this book as they showed the actual sites of London at the time and I liked how Audrey does not care about conventions and puts herself out there following her passions. I won't tell you who the Ripper turns out to be, I'll leave that to you friends. But this is an interesting look at the forensics of the time mixed with a case that stirs the imagination. So tread carefully the streets of London, you never know when Jack will appear and happy reading my friends.

Heart of Betrayal

Lia is trapped in Venda and must find a way to get back to her kingdom with the love of her life Rafe. But Kaden is determined to win her back. Of course neither of them may have a say if the Komizar has anything to say about it. He sees the value in keeping the princess for himself and using her as a symbol of hope for his people, In this sequel to Kiss of Deception, the stakes are higher than ever. One false move and all Lia loves will be destroyed. She must find a way to play the Komizar's game until she and Rafe can figure out a way to get free. But the longer Lia is in Venda, the more she sees a people that need her. Her gift of the sight shows her things as they could be. And her family has made her public enemy number one if she tries to go home. Where does Lia belong when everyone wants a piece of her? Will she be able to rise as a princess of a new people or continue to be used as a pawn by those more powerful? I love the characters in these books. Lia is a strong, smart, courageous woman. Rate is a dashing prince with a heart that beats for only Lia. Kaden, the misunderstood assassin who want something for himself. Aster, the serving girl determined to save Lia even if it puts her in great danger. Pauline, the loyal friend who is the only one who can convince Lia's family of what happened to her. They all have such life to them. This book made me gasp in horror at my desk during silent reading and tears may have formed. I look forward to reading the next book in the trilogy and hope for a happily ever after... but I'm sure there will be some drama along the way! Happy reading my friends!

Infinite

This is a first. One of my students wrote this book last year during NaNoWriMo. Her name is Riley Esparza. She went the extra mile and got it published. I am so proud of her. She is 14. This book is about Atlanta, a time traveling former pirate with a murky past. She finds herself in one predicament after another with her best friend/love interest James. She meets all kinds of shady people she can't trust. I loved reading the names of people I know and could put their personalities with their characters. It was fun knowing that she is hooked on writing more books. I'm super excited for her success. This is a student book, but if you are a young reader or writer, give it a try! Looking forward to seeing her grow into an accomplished writer. Behind her 100 percent! Happy Reading my friends!

Unhooked

I loved the premise of this book, Captain Hook as hero. Pan as villain. Gwen is kidnapped from London and brought to Neverland. But up is down and she is in the clutches of Captain Hook- a young Hook of course. He tries to convince her that Pan is evil, but Gwen is stubborn and believe the stories she was told as a child. She escapes with Pan in hopes of finding her friend Olivia, who was kidnapped with her. But Pan is not the Pan of stories. Nor is Gwen a mere mortal. She is a pawn in a deadly game to wake the sleeping Fay Queen. It's tough to decide who to trust when nothing is clear. She must make herself remember her life or be lost to Neverland forever. I don't know if I would recommend this book. I didn't really like any of the characters too much, except Hook. I think the ending was super sad and unsatisfactory. Like I said at the beginning I liked the idea of the hero, villain switch, but as I read somewhere this week, all villains are the heroes of their own stories. I wanted more from Gwen, but that may be because I spent the week reading books with dynamic heroines in them. If you love the tale of Peter Pan, this is a definite twist you may enjoy. Happy reading my friends!

We Are Ants

I took this with me to the beach yesterday. I wanted a non-supernatural read. This is the story of Henry who has lost his boyfriend Jesse to suicide. Henry has a history of being kidnapped by aliens. Or so he says. The aliens have given him the task to decide if he should save the earth or let it end on January 29th. That gives him 144 days to decide if life is worth saving. Now, is he really being kidnapped? Henry is destroyed by the death of Jesse. He is now in an abusive relationship with the most closeted popular boy in school. Marcus is horrible to Henry, calling him Spaceboy, attacking him with his friends and eventually leaving Henry so bruised and battered greater consequences arise. Henry lives with his miserable mother, wallowing in her divorce, not following her dreams and his obnoxious older brother Charlie. None of these things give Henry a reason to save the Earth. He can’t find a reason to live. Until Diego Vega walks into his classroom. Diego is full of life and mystery, but he is straight. Or so Henry thinks. Diego tries to break through Henry’s walls and show him the beauty in the world, but he comes with his own troubled past. Will he be able to break through in time to save the world? Or at least save Henry? This book is filled with heartbreak and drama. So many of the issues are current and timely. Henry is truly not sure of his worth and so many teens today are probably feeling the same feelings. This book will give you hope along with the heartbreak. It’s an interesting read. Happy reading my friends!

Falling Kingdoms

Well the cover says this is for Game of Thrones fans. I don’t know if I  feel as certain of that, but I will say it is a promising start to a fantasy series. There are three kingdoms at play. One is lush and rich. One is barren and harsh and one can only grow grapes for the wine that they are taken advantage of for. Cleo is the princess of Auranos. On a wine seeking adventure one day, her friend kills a boy form Paelsia. She is horrified. The brother of the slain boy is determined to get revenge, not only on the slayer but on the cold princess as well. This sets Jacob on a path of destruction to avenge his brother. Then there is Magnus, the prince of LImeros. He is born of a cold hearted father. As of late, Magnus begins to have feelings for his beautiful sister Lucia. He knows it’s wrong, but he doesn’t know what to do about it. Don’t worry friends, they aren’t really related. Lucia is a stolen child who is prophecied to be a sorceress of the greatest power. Magnus’s father plans to use her to conquer all the kingdoms and put them under his power. These four are bound to cross paths and bring misery to each other. But it may be that the only way they can save themselves is to team up and fight the evil together. But that is just a guess, as this one ends in a cliffhanger. Of course. I’m not sure I like any of the characters that much yet. They each have major flaws and are so narrow minded, but I’m sure I will grow to love them- or not. (but none as much as Jon Snow) I’m looking forward to the next adventure in Rebel Spring but I am on vacation so it will have to wait until I get home. Happy reading my friends!

Wrath and Dawn

Have you heard the tale of Shahrzad? How she charmed her husband with endless stories just to keep herself alive? This is that story retold. Shahrzad has sacrificed herself to get revenge for her best friend Shiva, who was killed by the Caliph after her wedding night. One of 72 girls to meet the same fate. Shazi plans to charm Khalid and convince him to keep her alive long enough that she can kill him and get revenge for her friend’s death. Khalid is intrigued by her and lets her live to see one dawn after the next. As she gets to know him better her heart begins to betray her mind. Is he really the evil that everyone thinks he is? Or might there be a reason for the deaths that no one knows. As Shazi finds herself more drawn to him each passing day, she has to decide if she should go through with her plan or fight by his side. Of course, forces beyond her control are working against her, her childhood love Tariq and her father are planning to save her. But does Shazi even want to be saved? This was a great twist on the age old tale.  I loved the characters and the conflicts they had to face. I can’t wait to continue the story with the next book in the series. It was nice to read a different genre book for a change. Happy reading my friends!

Crooked Kingdom

I am such a fan of this author. I loved the Grisha series and I think I may love this series even more. This is the sequel to Six of Crows the story of Kaz Brekker and his gang who run the streets trying to survive in the time of the Grisha. Kaz is broken, not only in body, but in spirit and the crew he surrounds himself with will have to try and bring him back from the dark place he dwells in. He has just gotten Inej back, the Wraith, who he loves more than he will ever admit. Jesper, the crackshot, who longs for Kaz’s approval is determined to help Wylan get revenge on his evil father Jan Van Eck. Wylan, the illiterate son of a wealthy businessman who finally admits that his father is not ever going to be the man he hoped for. Then there is Nina, the Grisha Tailor, who may have lost her powers after her run in with jurda parem. She will rely on Matthias, who must overcome his hatred and distrust of Grisha, to  bring her back from death to find a reason to live again. This crew faces challenges from within and without and must use all the cunning of the streets to break those who oppress them and leave them with nothing. I love the way this is set in the same universe as the Grisha series and several make the crossover. My favorite being Strumhold- man I missed that guy. From the beautiful cover art to the bright red pages, this book was an adventure from start to finish. Happy reading my friends!

Empire of Storms

If you aren't already reading this series, this will mean nothing to you. All I can say is go to the beginning and read Assassin's Blade and you begin the adventure of your reading life. I cannot tell you how fast you will fall in love with these characters. I cannot tell you how your heart will ache at the end of each book. What I can say about Sarah Maas's book is that they are wholly addicting. They revolve around Aelin/ Celaena. (Stop reading if you haven't read this series) She is the lost Queen of Terranes. She is surrounded by her court. Rowan- Fae Prince, Aedion, her cousin, Dorian, her dearest friend, Lysandra, the shape shifter, Manon the witch. They, who should be foes, must team up to defeat the ancient evil Erawen and the Fae Queen Maeve. They are undermanned, undersupplied and even though they have massive powers, they may not have enough to lock Erawen away. But Aelin has many tricks up her Fireheart sleeves. She will do anything to save her people as well as her family of friends. The cost, however, will be more that this reader can bear. I could tell you all the horrible things that happen. I could tell you that this is a love story at it's core. I could tell you that it won't stay with you after the last page. But that my friends, is not true. I love the world that exists in these stories. I love the characters that she has created. I am terrified how this will all end- can they all survive the war they are in? The odds are not favorable. Until then, if you read this series, you know what I am talking about, if you aren't you should have already stopped reading. Either way, what a ride! Happy reading my friends!

A Torch Against the Night

The first book in this series became one of my favorites last summer. This sequel doesn't disappoint. Laia, Elias, Helene, Izzy, Keris, Keenan and a new cast of characters pick up where we left off. Elias and Laia on the run to save her brother Darin who is wasting away in Kauf prison. Helene on the hunt as Blood Shrike on a mission to kill her best friend at the behest of the new Emperor. No one is safe, everyone is in peril. Not all survive.  This is a society where no one can be trusted and sacrifices are the way of life. Keris, Elias's evil mother is on a  mission to kill all Scholars, which include Laia. She is determined to end Darin as he has the secret to making the kind of steel that can help kill the Masks, of which Elias was formerly a part of. Keris has a diabolical plan that will crush Laia and her son. But all is not lost. Helene is halfheartedly searching for Elias to protect her family. When it comes down to it, will she be able to capture him to save her family? Will Elias be able to defy fate and make a deal for his life? Will Laia be able to choose who she loves without breaking the heart of the other? Can Darin stay alive until help arrives? This is a fast paced story told from three points of view. I love all the characters and hate that we lose some of them in this sequel. If you love Sarah Maas's books, you will love this series that starts with An Ember in the Ashes. I couldn't put it down, except when I had to grade an ever growing pile of papers. I look forward to the next as I jump into Empire of Storms, which I am told will destroy me. Don't know if I'm ready for that, but I miss Rowan, Celaena and the gang so I guess I'll take my chances. Happy reading my friends!

Mark of the Thief

I absolutely loved Jennifer Nielsen's other series, The Shadow Throne. This series takes place in ancient Rome. Nic is a slave toiling in the mines. But he has the heart of a free person. When he has the chance to escape with a cursed bulla filled with magic, he takes it. On the back of a mythical griffin. But Nic has made a promise to protect his sister and he has seriously ticked off General Radul, who wants what Nic has stolen. Then again, everyone wants what Nic has stolen because the magic it possesses will enable the holder to conquer and rule all of Rome. This is a nice book for a younger student or less savvy reader. I liked it enough to finish it, but don't think I would recommend it to most of my 8th graders. I think a sixth grader who likes the Percy Jackson books would enjoy spending some time with Nic and friends. It's always nice to have a male main character in YA books, they are few and far between. With that, I just received my box with A Torch Against the Night in it, so I'm off to get started on this much awaited sequel. And then it's back to Aelin, Rowan, and Dorian and the heartbreak I'm sure Sarah Maas will cause. Happy reading my friends!

Kiss of Deception

I wasn't expecting this one! A student returned this book and when I took a closer look, I realized this one was made for me. This is Lia's story. She is a princess being forced to marry a prince she has never met. As all damsel's do, she decides to run and hide. But little does she know that two people have been sent to find her. One the prince she has scorned and the other an assassin sent to end her. Surprise, surprise,  they both find her unlike what they expected. Karen and Rafe are enchanted by this princess who has taken to life as a tavern maid. And she is take with both of them. Of course, they are all lying about who they are and this will cause quite the dilemma. As feelings grow, some returned and others not, the trio will face the ultimate test. One must kidnap her and return her to his boss, which might be deadly considering he never killed her. The other must find a way to save her, even at risk to his own life. When a life changing incident happens on the trip, Lia is changed for good. And now even if the one she loves can save her, she may be passed saving. This is a tricky little book in the beginning. Who is the prince and who is the assassin and who will Lia fall for. I'm not usually surprised, but this one got me. I love all the characters, no one is beyond redemption yet, but as in all love triangles, someone's heart will be broken. Since I came to this book so late, the next two in the series are already out- yay! But the sequels in the near future- An Ember in the Ashes and the next Sarah Maas book are coming soon, so this series may have to wait a little while. If you love a good princess/assassin story, this one is for you. Love. love. loved it!  Happy reading my friends!

Fans of the Impossible Life

This is the story of 3 broken teenagers. Jeremy, who is just going back to school after an extreme incidence of bullying. Mira, who is just going back to school after a suicide attempt and Sebby, who is not going back to school because he has more problems than one kid should have to experience. Their roads converge and a friendship is born. But it is not the healthiest of friendships. Sebby and Jeremy become involved, Mira is trying to not crawl into bed and stay there and school is not really a safe place for any of their fragile psyches. Jeremy's story is told in first person, Mira's in third and for the first time in a YA book that I have read, Sebby's is told in 2nd person. This book tackles so many issues: chronick fatigue, depression, homosexuality, drug and alcohol abuse, foster care, mixed families, bullying etc. However, underneath it all, it shows that friends can save you when you need it most and that families don't have to look stereotypical to be functional. This book is for a mature reader but I highly recommend it- couldn't put it down ( thanks Joie and Brooklyn for insisting I read it- wish you were still in my class to discuss it with me!) The friends face the impossible social situations that arrive in society (and high school) together and are there for each other when no one else is with understanding and compassion and most importantly- love. I loved reading this book, although I did it with my eyes half closed for fear of what might happen to these interesting characters. I hope you all dream of the impossible life and happy reading my friends!

In the After

Amy was just hanging out at home watching tv when They attacked. They took out most of civilization in a short amount of time. She had to learn to be quiet, and stealthy and how to survive and quickly. Her parents never made it home so she was on her own. Until one day she finds herself in the grocery store and finds a toddler, alone. Amy decides to save the kid and names her Baby. Amy and Baby stay alive for 3 years on their own. They develop their own sign language. They learn to scavenge. They learn to live in the dark and avoid everyone else. But on one of their scavenging trips they meet Amber and take her in. Amber just doesn't get it though, she's too loud, too sloppy and she will get them killed if they aren't careful. Amy doesn't trust her and rightly so. One day a helicopter comes and Amy is sure They will kill them. But much to her surprise, it is humans who saves them and takes them to New Hope- a place free from Them. Unfortunately for Amy, she feels like something is just not right. She keeps pushing the boundaries to get her questions answered. She sneaks into places she shouldn't be. She raises suspicions in people who are in charge. All this leads to a terrible revelation that will rock Amy's world. I really liked this book. It was a fast, easy read. Nothing new, just a twist on an alien story. Are they really aliens? I liked Amy's strength and loyalty to Baby. I will definitely read the sequel. Summer is just about done my friends, so the reading will slow down for a while. Excited to meet my new kids and get them on a path to reading! Happy reading my friends!

The Girl From Everywhere

Nix is sailing with her father. He is a Navigator. He can travel through time if he has a map from the time and place he wants to go to. He wants to get back to Hawaii to save Nix's mom. But Nix is afraid that if he goes back and changes time, she will cease to exist. But she helps him anyway because that's the kind of daughter she is. When the map they need becomes available, a plan is hatched to get the funds to pay for  the map. But the consequences of the plan will have lasting affects and many will have to pay the price. Along with her best friend Kash, Nix must decide if she is willing to help her father and risk her life or leave and Navigate on her own. This story is filled with mythological creatures and places. Nix is the captain of her own fate. Kush, her willing sidekick, who, of course, could be a love interest will do anything for her. And Blake, who wants to do what he can to save Hawaii, but isn't necessarily willing to pay the price of that. I really enjoyed this book. It was filled with pirate adventures, exotic places and historical references. When it comes to time travel, I always just try and follow along and take it for what it is- you know the whole time travel conundrum. I look forward to Nix's next adventure, if there is a second book, and if not, I can picture her at the bow of the boat leading it to distant shores. Happy reading my friends!

The Star Touched Queen

Well now I know what the fuss was about! Maya is the daughter of the Raja. She lives with the Harem wives and is NOT a favorite of theirs. She has been given a horoscope that predicts death and destruction. She would rather spy on her father and learn the politics of running a country. She figures no one will want to marry her because of the horoscope and she is happy about this. But war is brewing and she is soon in the position of bargaining chip. She must choose a husband, but finds out on the eve of the choice, her father would rather she kill herself so he can justify going to war. Maya doesn't know what to do when a mysterious suitor gives her the chance to escape and be his equal. She jumps at the chance and follows him to his kingdom, which, of course, is not what it seems. All he asks of her is to trust him. The one thing Maya cannot do is trust. When she finally realizes, too late, that he is more than he seems, she must figure out a way to save her Raja and her kingdom. This is a beautifully written story. The language is vivid and melodious and it made it a pleasure to read- and often times reread a line repeatedly. It is a story of strength and determination and a love that can transcend time. I highly recommend you spend a few hours in this world with Maya and Amar. And if you can find the Night Bazaar, buy yourself a souvenir and enjoy the ride. Happy reading my friends!

Seventh Son

This is a double book version of this series The Last Apprentice. In this movie tie-in, two books have been combined into one version. Now, if you saw the movie and want to read the book, be warned, there is nothing similar about the two. In the book version, Tom is a young boy of 13 who is the seventh son of a seventh son. He is set to be the apprentice to Mr. Gregory the Spook. The Spook's job is to rid the county of ghosts, ghasts and boggarts of various strengths. But the most important job is to control the witch population. Tom isn't sure if he is up to the challenge of the lonely life this job will bring, but his Mam says he is destined to be the best and he only wants to make her proud. Tom is a kindhearted soul and this seems to get him into trouble around every turn. But he is dedicated to Mr. Gregory and will do everything he can to rid the county of evil. He comes up against Mother Malkin- witch supreme and The Bane- a first level boggart. If he can survive these tests, he may well be on his way to becoming a master Spook. I won't say this was my favorite series and I probably won't read anymore. but if you like a light read about the supernatural you may enjoy these stories. Coincidentally, the movie was on while I was reading this book and besides the brief appearance of Kit Harington, it was not as I expected. And it certainly doesn't resemble the books it was supposed to be based on. So, all in all, I was disappointed all around. Happy reading my friends!

Forget Tomorrow

Callie can't wait until her 17th birthday. That is the day she will receive her future memory. This memory will tell her what her life will be like. If she'll be famous, if she'll be happy, if she'll find love. What she doesn't expect is the memory of killing her little sister. In this society, you are arrested and kept in Limbo if you have a memory of a crime. Callie is arrested and thrown in jail where she awaits her fate. Logan used to be Callie's friend, but stopped talking to her five years ago. Suddenly, he's the one who breaks her out and leads her to Harmony, a secret camp where those who receive illegal memories go to live their lives. But Callie can't stay in Harmony, she has to get back and save her sister Jessa. Besides, Logan has to go back and she can't bear to be apart from him after they have finally become friends again. Something is bugging Callie though. There has to be a reason she would kill the little sister she loves and she is determined to figure it out. As she returns to Eden City, she comes to a horrifying realization about the future of society. She is left with only one decision, and no one is going to like it. This was an interesting book, with a similar storyline to that Tom Cruise movie I can't remember the name of. Should people be locked up because sometime in the future they MAY do something wrong? Can you change your fate? I liked this story and will read the rest when they are available. Plus the cover is really pretty! Not that I judge a book by it's cover! Happy reading my friends!

Heart of Dread Golden

This is book three of a trilogy so here's the backstory. Nat and Wes live in a world of ice. They meet in New Vegas and fall in love. Nat become a Drakonryder and goes on a quest to save the world. Wes finds out he is magic too and goes along for the ride so he can neutralize his twin sister Eliza who is filled with evil. In this book, they are at the end of the line. Nat must cast a spell that will require her to sacrifice all she loves to save the world. Everyone is fighting against her. The queen, Eliza  and a band of others who all want to cast the spell to gain power. No one can be trusted and Nat knows that to succeed, she will lose the only thing she is living for. As she watches each of her friends die, she gets closer to saving the world. But to what end. I like this series. It is action packed and has a nice love story. Nat and Wes don't waver in their love, they don't play stupid games. The group of friends are loyal and brave. The ending is... I'll let you find out for yourself. Nat is no damsel in distress and Wes is a true hero in every sense of the word, Book one is called  Frozen. So start there if you are a fan of the dystopian novel. Happy reading my friends.

New Order

I have to say, I really enjoyed this sequel to Young World. The Sickness has taken out the adults and little kids in the US. That leaves only the teens. And we know how that goes- Lord of the Flies anyone. Amidst the crazies, there are Jefferson and Donna and they run the Washington Square Tribe. But they know they can't go on as they have been and set out to find a cure for the Sickness. Guess what- they do. Jefferson's blood holds the key to the Cure. But once they find this the fun really begins. Because they find out the world didn't end, and things are life as usual in other places.  The adults who survived have been hanging out on Aircraft carriers figuring out what they are going to do with the tribes of kids in the US. Jefferson and his friends are convinced by a member of the Resistance that they must go back to New York and unite the Tribes so they won't be taken out by what's left of the government. As they make their escape TO New York (get it?) one of them is left behind. Both groups are on a path that will end up either saving the kids or helping to end what is left of the US. No one can be trusted and that is a lesson they all need to learn- but at what cost? And how will they get themselves out of this mess? This is told in alternating voices of several of the characters. It is an interesting look at how to restart a government and if it can even be done. Very timely considering our own country's inability to get things done. It is left in a cliffhanger that promises a great conclusion- if it is a trilogy. I think you will like this series, it has a little of everything! Happy reading my friends!

True Born

Couldn't put this book down. Lucy and Margot are twins in a time of the Plague. The Plague is wiping out people as they get older. You can be a Laster or a Splicer. If you are rich enough you can splice your DNA to have a longer life. And then there are the True Born. They have genetic mutations that allow them to do different things. Like Jared, who can shift into a deadly panther or Storm who is a huge Stag, antlers and all. On their 18th birthday, the girls will have a reveal party where they will be told what their DNA says. But something isn't quite right. When Margot is taken, Lucy must rely on the highly annoying Jared to help her get her sister back. Jared has a way of making Lucy super angry and super happy at the same time. Lucy doesn't know who to trust. Her parents seem to be hiding something, the crazy preacher outside the gates wants their blood and a Russian Prince is coming to chose with girl he wants to take back to Russia with him. Storm is determined to help Lucy and Margot figure out what they are. But this is fraught with danger and death. And Lucy isn't really sure who to trust. Can she give up her life in the Upper Circle, her parents and her sister to go with the True Borns to find out what makes her so special? And is Jared friend or foe? Or something more? This is book one in what will be a trilogy. I absolutely loved the story and the characters, especially Storm and his giant antlers! I am infuriated by the girls' parents who are so callus and unloving to their girls. I am fascinated to learn more about the True Borns and what Lucy means to them. And of course I am a sucker for a supernatural love story- especially when a hot shifter is involved! Enjoy my friends and happy reading!

Half Lost

This hasn't ever been my favorite series. I really liked book one, but as it's gone, I feel like I read them since I needed to finish. This is about Nathan and his quest to kill the White Witches who are out to hunt down and kill all the Black Witches. Nathan is a half blood, part of each. He had to kill his father in order to claim his Gifts and now Nathan is out to get Annalise who caused the death in the first place. Nathan is bent on revenge and kills any one he sees from the other side. Gabriel, his boyfriend, tries to pull him back and make him see the good in himself, but it may be too late to save Nathan. This book has the worst ending, sad and unsatisfying. After all Nathan goes through to help unify the two sides, he doesn't seem to get any peace. I guess the end is sort of spiritual and different, but not what I was in the mood for today. I like a happy ending. So there. That being said, this wouldn't be the first series I would recommend, so read if it sounds like something you'd like As for me, I think I'll try a new series instead of finishing the Fifth Wave series for now. The pile is high and summer is quickly coming to an end. Happy reading my friends!

Flamecaster

I started this book a month ago, read a few pages, got furious and put it down. See, Cinda Williams Chima writes some of my favorite series'. One of them features a boy named Han who is on my top ten fictional boy list. The Seven Realms series is in my top 2 series. Mrs. Chima killed my Han in the first pages of this book. So I'm sure you understand my closing it and pretending it never happened. But cooler head finally prevailed and Rylee told me it was great so I gave it another chance. This new series is the story of Han's son Ash. Ash witnesses his father's death and feels so helpless that he runs away to figure out a way to get revenge. It is also the story of Jenna. A girl living in the town of Delphi where the best you can hope is to survive another day in the mines. She seems to have a knack with fire and explosives (foreshadowing). Jenna has a mark on her neck and knows that one day, it will cause people to come looking for her, but she doesn't know why. Ash and Jenna's paths cross and they see hope in each other. They have a common goal to kill the King of Arden, a blast from Raisa's past- READ the other series first please!!! He is pure evil. The two of them, with help from Lila (I won't tell you who she is, it's a great surprise!) try to find a way to kill the king, save Jenna from another threat and protect the Grey Wolf Throne. I LOVED this book and these characters definitely live up to their predecessors! Even Amon Byrne makes a small appearance (and the romantic in me hope he and Raisa get another chance now that Han is no longer with us). This book is filled with magic, intrigue and romance and I can't wait for the next chapter! I don't know if I can forgive the loss of Han, but this goes a long way toward that forgiveness that his son is just as fun as he was. So my friends, don't be scared, it's gonna be okay! Happy reading!!

The Crown's Game

Vika and Nikolai are both in possession of magic. They are training to be the Imperial Enchanter of Russia. But what they don't know is that only one of them will survive the Crown's Game. Via is being raised in secret by her father. She is lively and confident and can create the most amazing magic. Her heart is loving and light. She is certain she will be able to help Russia. When she finds out she must battle another Enchanter, she is determined to win so she can be reunited with her father. Nikolai has been raised in the city. He is best friends with the future Tzar of Russia, Pasha. No one knows he is an Enchanter except his mentor. He is also determined to win the game an live. After a chance encounter with Vika, Nikolai is not so sure he wants to win if it means her death. But he doesn't want to die. What to do? As the game begins, the two Enchanters create the most amazing magic and in the process feel the pull they have towards each other. Pasha feels a pull towards Vika too. As the game nears it's end, Pasha feels betrayed by both of them and does something rash. He will be the cause of the death of one of his friends, but which one? Who will make the ultimate sacrifice for love? What other lies have the two of them been told? And who's magic will prevail? I loved this sweet and interesting book. The characters are lovable and complex, the setting is different and interesting and the conflict is seemingly unresolvable. I only hope this is not the end of their story or I think I have to be really sad. I'm going to pretend that this isn't the end so I can go on with my day. Happy reading my friends!

The Rose Society

Let me start by saying the Legend series by Marie Lu is one of my favorites (except for the end). But I really am having trouble connecting to this Young Elites series. I have had this second book sitting on my shelf for a while and decided to give it a try. I guess I just don't like a book told from the villain's point of view. Adeline is unlikeable most of the time. And this book is really all about her and her need to destroy. I realize it comes from a place of insecurity and loneliness but even in her vulnerable moments it is super hard to connect to her. In this novel, she is seeking revenge on everyone. The Inquisitors who tried to burn her at the stake and the Daggers who threw her out of their society. She sets out to build her own group with her sister. They search for the thief Magiano in order to convince him to follow her as she seeks the thrown left behind in Enzo's death. When he agrees to follow her, she is able to collect a band of misfits who the Daggers wouldn't take. Meanwhile the Daggers are attempting to bring Enzo back from the dead. Raffaele, however, thinks this is a terrible idea and encourages them to not do this. They don't listen, Adeline gets involved, and low and behold Enzo is back, but not the Enzo they knew and loved. All the groups converge in a huge battle in which no one is a winner. This is a dark book that has left me ambivalent about the rest of the series. I do like Magiano and Sergio. But I'm not sure if that is enough. I am hoping Adeline is reformed in the next book, but her powers are so dark and twisted I don't know if it can be done. So, read at your own risk if you want a different kind of narrator. Happy reading my friends!

A Court of Mist and Fury

I feel like I held my breath through the last 300 pages of this sequel to  A Court of Thorns and Roses. So I catch my breath, let me say that Sarah Maas creates some of the best characters in YA. This is now the second of her series that is a favorite of mine. That being said, this is NOT for young readers. Onward. This is Feyre's story. She has died at the hands of the evil queen Aramanthra and been brought back by the seven high lords of the realm. So now she is Fae. As she goes home to live with Tamlin, she finds his type of love stifling. Only the thought of spending one week a month with Rhysand of the Night Court was worse. Rhys is her enemy. When he claims her for his week on her wedding day, she isn't sure if she is relieved or not. But Rhys is not what he seems. He sees her wasting away under Tamlin's 'love' and on one of her trips to his kingdom, she decides to stay so she can save herself and learn about the powers she has received from the seven lords. He encourages her to train, learn to read and be herself with no strings attached. War is coming and Rhys knows that Feyre will be an asset in the uncoming fight. He may also have other reasons to want to keep Feyra close. As she learns what it means to have a family and a man who treat her with love and respect, Feyre must decide if she is more comfortable in the Night or in the Spring. Her new family, Cassian and Azriel- Illyrian Warriors who will lay down their lives for her, Mor, her friend, and confidant, and Amren, whose way of showing she cares is downright scary, all show her that her place is with them. Eyre must make an ultimate sacrifice to save them all. Sarah Maas has this way of creating a love interest that has you falling in love, for a book or two and they she has them do something to make them unlikeable. She did it with Chaol and Celaena. (But I still love Chaol) and she does it with Tamlin. But that is okay because she gives you characters like Rowan and Rhys. I am left wondering who would win in a fight between those two! But I digress. I loved this book and these characters. It is for mature audiences as the love scenes are graphic. If you like a Faery Tale, this is a great series for you- Happy reading my friends!!

If I Was Your Girl

Meet Amanda. Hers is a life of fear. Fear what people will think of her. Fear of what people may do to her. Fear of how she thinks of herself. Because Amanda used to be Andrew. After a suicide attempt and a beating at the hand of classmates, Amanda moves to live with her dad. Who she hasn't talked to in 6 years. Amanda starts school and makes friends. She attracts the attention of Grant, the handsome football player with secrets of his own. Amanda is afraid to tell him about her past and the repercussions if her secret gets out. But she and Grant get closer and closer and she realizes she loves him. She has friends, her father seems to accept her changes and she has a date to homecoming. Then someone she trusted, someone she considered a friend, destroys Amanda's world. Now Amanda must decide if she can face the consequences of the betrayal or run back to her former home. Will Grant be willing to see her as she sees herself- a girl who he may or may not be able to love. This is such a timely and heartbreaking novel of not only the transgender world, but the world in general. Everyone has secrets but some are dangerous. And even after you have shared your true self with the world, bad things can happen because people can be close minded and evil. I will be happy to have this book on my shelf for the students who relate to Amanda as well as the students who need to be understanding of Amanda. Happy reading my friends!

The Raven King

Book 4 of the Raven Cycle. Blue, Gansy, Ronan, and Adam. On a quest to wake a long dead king to ask for a wish. Gansy, knowing he is to die. Blue knowing she is the one who will kill him. Ronan and Adam doing everything in their magical powers to stop the inevitable from happening. Many love stories. Many deaths. Many mystical happenings. This series is all about magic and the power of friendship. It is about believing in the unbelievable. And it is about trusting those friends who know you even more than you know yourself. I don't know which character is my favorite- it changed every book and every chapter. The characters dreamed into life by Ronan are fantastic, interesting and complex. The love stories are the same- fantastic, interesting and complex. I have loved every book Maggie Stiefvater has written, but this series is amazing. (Scorpio Races is my very favorite though!) The story line is complex and not for the lighthearted reader, you have to pay attention. But I highly recommend not only this series, but anything by this author. They all contain some supernatural element and all leave you wanting more. If this series interests you- start with book 1-The Raven Boys. But be careful what you wish for, Cabeswater may be listening! Happy reading my friends!

inVision

Nick Gautier is at it again- for the 7th time to be exact. If you haven't started this series- go back to 1 and read Instinct and meet Nick and his world of problems. See, Nick is the big bad- the Malachai who is doomed to end the world and kill all his friends- in the future. This Nick is an awkward 6 ft. 4 inch bundle of insecurity and teen angst. He is surrounded by his ancient posse- Acheron, Kyrian, Caleb, Xev, Simi and Kode. Each doing what they can to help him change the future and stop him from becoming the evil he is destined to be. But changing the future ain't easy, especially when living in the Big Easy. Nick tends to make stupid mistakes with the best intentions. In this volume, he is suddenly without his powers and this can only mean that someone has come from the future to kill him. And that person can only be his son. Unfortunately, Nick isn't even aware he has a son- even a future son. As he starts to get visions of the future, he is even more unsure than ever how to stop the destruction of all he loves. I love this series for a lot of reasons, but sometimes the names and alternate futures can get a bit much. More action, less family tree. But Nick is a first order smart aleck with such a devoted group of friends/protectors that you can't help root for him. Again, there was not enough Kyrian for my taste- he is my favorite, but this was better than the last one and certainly leaves Nick in a precarious position-which he should be used to. I also love the setting even more now that I have traveled to New Orleans and enjoyed my own plate of beignets at Cafe du Monde. So enjoy my chers!   I hope you enjoy Mr. Gautier as much as I do! Happy reading my friends!

Jackaby

What a great little book this was! Abigail Rook, on the run from the boring life her parents have in mind, winds up in America, quite by chance. Fresh off the boat and looking for a job, she runs into Jackaby- picture Sherlock Holmes much younger self. Jackaby notices her and the supernatural beings she brings with her (unknowingly) and Abigail winds up working as his assistant. See, he is a supernatural detective. And something supernatural is on a killing spree in the city. Abigail is of use to Jackaby as she notices the mundane, unimportant things, which he finds interesting. As the crime scenes pile up, Abigail and Jackaby must race to find the culprit- who may or may not be high up in the police department. The are surrounded by an eclectic cast of characters: Douglas the Duck, Jenny the Ghost, Charlie, the cop with an unusual background, as well as a banshee and a troll. Each one makes the story more lively and entertaining. The cover says a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Buffy the Vampire Slayer and that is an apt description. Jackaby is hilarious, Abigail is a delight and Charlie is downright adorable. I look forward to the next adventure of this detective agency. I highly recommend this light, fun, read. Happy reading my friends!

All the Truth That's in Me

The timeliness of my reading this book is interesting. When boys/men continue to minimize crimes against women, society as a whole suffers. This novel by Julie Berry is set in a different time, but could be today. A time when women are vilified and belittled and held accountable for actions they have no control over. Judith was taken. Along with her friend Lottie, she disappears from society for two years. Lottie is found dead, but Judith walks out of the woods and back into her family. But she is different. Her tongue has been partially cut out and she is afraid to speak of what has been done to her. So society decides for themselves what they think must have happened to her. And her silence does nothing to dispel their thoughts. They think she is slow. They think she is not virtuous. They think they can do what they want to her. She doesn't disagree with them. Even her mother has forbidden her from trying to speak. The boy she has loved all her life is about to marry another. Her brother must have his foot amputated. The school master makes inappropriate gestures towards her. And still she won't use her voice. But unlikely allies help her realize if she doesn't speak up, all will be lost. I really loved this book. It was so different from other books I've read. It is much like Speak, where until you find your voice, people will find a way to put words in your mouth, even if they are not accurate. Girls need to understand their worth and power, and it has to start with speaking up for ourselves and not being afraid of the repercussions. We have to show people how to treat us and not stand silently when they do us wrong. What a thought provoking book!  I would recommend it to better readers only because the story plays with time as the story of her kidnapping is told. Don't let that scare you away.
Happy reading my friends!

Morning Star

Oh Darrow, how I missed you! This novel is the conclusion of the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown. It is the story of a society based on colors, where the Golds sought to repress all other colors to their benefit. Darrow is a Red- a lowly miner on Mars. But he is carved into a Gold to overthrow their system after his wife is killed for her resistance. Darrow becomes the face of the Rising- the Reaper and finds a band of loyal friends who are sympathetic to this cause. They come from all colors and each is more interesting than the next. When the book opens, Darrow is at the mercy of the Jackal and is being kept in a box, losing all hope. By some miracle Sevrus- Ares, finds him, frees him and sets in motion a war to end all wars. Darrow must reconcile with his love, Mustang, sister of the Jackal, who has an amazing secret of her own! He must decide if he can once again trust Cassius, who was once like a brother. He must try and get Roque back on his side and he must use Ragnar to control the Valkaries in order to win the day. Much evil is done. Many die. Even your favorite characters. You know who you are! But this is a fitting end to an incredible series. It is not an easy read- there are complicated plots involving government and battle. It reads more adult than YA. But if you can handle some warfare and violence, the pay off is fantastic. But you can't start here, you must go back to the beginning.  I truly enjoyed this series and recommend it to advanced readers. Happy reading my friends- howwwwwllllll!!

Snow Like Ashes

The world is divided into seasons and Winter has the short end of the stick. Their land has been decimated by the other seasons and their people enslaved. All that is left of a once great kingdom is a band of 8 survivors, which includes the King of Winter- Mather- a teenage boy. He is joined by Sir and Meira whose sole purposes are to get back the locket that holds their kingdoms magic so they can reclaim their land and free their people. All Meira wants is to help her king and friend. She wants to be useful, but Sir never lets her do anything dangerous. Her desire to help her kingdom leads her to a marriage with a Rhythym Prince whose kingdom has vowed to help Winter once they are wed. This is not what Meira has in mind of course. She wants to be a soldier and marry Mather and do normal things. But she meets Theron and he is much more that she thought he would be. Unfortunately for Winter, Theron's father is not honorable and brings their enemies to the gate. When Meira is captured and threatened with torture and death, she must use all her senses to find a way to survive. Of course, all is not what it seems and power may be in hands different that what is expected. Lies told over time come to a head and the truth is as explosive as the dark power that is unleashed. Meira must become more than she ever thought she could be to save her people and bring them hope. I had a hard time in the beginning of this book connecting to the characters. I've read many books of this genre and many girls who want to be soldiers etc. and this one didn't catch my attention at first. But I have to say things picked up as the book progressed and I am definitely interested int the rest of the story. Not- I have to run to the store right now and find out what happens- interested, but sometime in the future I can get back to the tale- interested. So, I leave it to you to decide how you feel my friends. It is summer and the books are piled up next to the Barnes and Noble gift cards I was showered with at the end of this amazing school year. Happy reading my friends!

Mosquitoland

After 660 pages of supernatural Shadowhunter goodness, I decided to step back into reality with this book by David Arnold. Mim comes from a line of women who have mental illness and her father is determined to keep her off that path. Mim does not appreciate his efforts and sets out on a quest to see her mother- who she has found out- is sick. Of course, Mim is rather strong willed and does not inform her father or stepmother of her intentions and steals a can  of money and hops on a Greyhound bus to get to Cleveland, where her mom is in the hospital. Along the way she meets both kindhearted and nefarious characters, all who change her perceptions on life. Arlene, Carl, Poncho Man, Ahab and most of all, Beck and Walt. Those two help her realize what it means to have friends who become family so quickly you don't even realize it is happening. Mim is not exactly a reliable narrator and you are never sure that what she sees and does is actually happening. At one point, I had a small heart attack when I thought .... well, I don't want to ruin that for you. I really liked this book, it had such a heart and soul and honesty. I don't know that every middle schooler would relate, but the more mature reader who loves realistic fiction would certainly enjoy this tale. Mim is a powerhouse of personality and will. But I think deep down, she craves family and friends like we all do. This is not a light summer read, but it is worth the time. Happy reading my friends... 5 days until summer!

Lady Midnight

Let me say I am horrified by how long it took me to read this book. I don't know the reason-work and other such nonsense. And I guess a part of me was avoiding the inevitable sad ending I knew would come with his book.  See, it's not my first rodeo with Cassandra Clare and her Shadowhunter world. In fact it is my 11th rodeo. I don't know how she does it, I 'm just grateful that she does. This is a new series that picks up where the Mortal Instruments leaves off. If finds us with Emma Carstairs- yes those Corsairs but more on that later and the Blackthorn family who run the LA Institute. Julian is the head of the family since his brother Mark and sister Helen have been banished due to their Fae blood. Julian and Emma have become parabatai but both are starting to regret that move. You see, you are not allowed to fall in love with your parabatai. Mark shows up at the Institute after years of being forced to ride with the Wild Hunt in order to convince Julian and Emma to help the Fae figure out who is murdering their kind. Mark doesn't know his place in the strange world of his family and nothing is the same as when he left. Time passes different in Faerie. As Emma and the Blackthorns (great band name by the way) are pulled into the mysterious deaths. They are betrayed by those who had been considered friends. And as their love grows stronger, Emma must make heartbreaking decisions to save Julian. This book is over 600 pages and I can't do it justice in a simple blog post. But know that everyone I love in this series makes an appearance (except my all time favorite Will Herondale) Jem, Tessa, Jace, Clary, Alec, Magnus etc. My eyes were teary many times and the end is a major heartbreaker. But I have faith and the experience of reading many series that if there is a happy ending in the first book, where would you go from there. So I will hope for a happy eventual ending while enjoying yet another Clare journey. I want to be a Shadowhunter. And if that can't happen, I'll have to just be a super fan. You could read this book as a start, but you would miss so much of the backstory that led to this place and time. So go back to City of Bones and carve out the rest of this year and I'll see you in 10 books. Meanwhile, I'll wait for my parabatai to show up and give me a fortitude rune as I have the long wait until book 2. Happy reading my friends- 10 days until summer and miles to go before I sleep!

Passenger

I loved this book in every timeline I have been a part of!! This is Etta's story. She is a concert violinist who is about to make her debut amidst a raging case of stage fright. She lives in New York with her mother who doesn't seem to pay much attention to her. But at least she has Alice, her violin teacher, as a mother figure. Then there is Nicholas. A sailor in 1776 working to find independence from all the restraints an African American young man has in those times. This is Etta and Nicholas's love story. What you say? But Etta and Nicholas live over 200 years apart! How can this be? Let me tell you! They are Travelers. They have the power to travel through passages in time. Etta doesn't know this until the night of her debut when she is dragged through a passage and onto Nicholas's ship. In 1776. The evil head of the Ironside family needs her to find a special artifact that her mother has hidden somewhere in time. Of course, Etta knows nothing about any of this and is shocked and dismayed to find out all the secrets her mother has been keeping. If she doesn't do as Old Ironside asks, her own timeline will be forever altered. Nicholas vows to help her, but only to further his own desires. At first any way. As they roam through exotic places in time, they realize they are a match for each other. But can two people from literally different times, find a place somewhere, together? Oh my gosh, the characters in this book are fantastic, well- developed and amazing. The story takes you to places in history and gives you a first hand view of life in each. You can almost feel the salt spray on your face as you stand on the deck of the boat with Nicholas or feel the heat of the desert in Syria as you ride on a camel with Etta. And I love that there is no love triangle in the normal sense, but societies rules become that third member as two racial diverse characters have to find a place where their romance won't get them killed. I can't say enough nice things about this book and as the cliffhanger promises more adventures to follow, I am ready to find my own passage to somewhere else... where I can be left alone to read!! Thank you Alexandra Bracken! Well done! Happy reading and Happy passages my friends!

Kill the Boy Band

From a historical tearjerker to this crazy modern romp- Kill the Boy Band is a cautionary tale of the perils of fandom. The Ruperts are a boy band made up of four boys named Rupert who were put together after competing on a reality show. Four fans set out to meet them and get tickets to their Thanksgiving show. That's when things go sideways. When fate brings the least talented Rupert into their grasp, the girls decide to keep him tied up in their room. There's Ingrid, the angry fan, Apple, the obsessed fan, Erin, the fan scorned and our narrator, the fan who uses 80's movies to hide her identity. Each girl loves a different Rupert. Or do they? As the four friends get deeper and deeper into the night and their situation gets more dire, the very basis of their friendship is tested. Do they have a relationship outside their love of the band? Do they really know each other at all? This book takes an interesting look into extreme fandom and what it can do to people, including the objects of the obsession. It has some hilarious moments, but underneath is a story of the loneliness that can come with being a fan and the desperation to be noticed. Even in a sea of people, the need to be seen is universal. So be warned, this may sound like a lighthearted book, but it has some serious layers. Happy reading my friends.

Salt to the Sea

It is a statement to how much I love this author that I would even read this book. WW2 books never have a happy ending. And this one is about the children/teens who had to face the warring factions of Russia AND Germany during WW2. Mix that with the fact that this is based on the tragic sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff and the fact that 9000 innocent people died, it's not a book I would run to. But from page one, I was transported to the group. Joana, Emilia, Florian, and the Shoe Poet as they walked and hid and foraged to get to the port to board a boat to escape the Russians against all odds. Each has a story so tragic as to break your heart. Each one has a fate to escape and run to. Each one saves the others until they reunite on the ship. The ship that was to be their salvation. Now we have all seen Titanic and the horror that was the sinking. But somehow reading about it through the eyes of teens was a thousand times worse. Sepetys is a master story teller. She weaves these characters tales seamlessly, one to the next in short chapters that make you read well past a reasonable hour. Even the fourth character, Alfred, a Nazi supporter, has a fascinating story he tells, but as a totally unreliable narrator. The beauty of this story is how we are able to see through their eyes, the horror that is war. And war is cruel. And people weren't treated as people. And heroic things were done, that no one knows about. And we continue this cycle, on different fields of battle. And no one stops to think of what is being destroyed. I sat on the beach today and finished this book. Tears were shed not only for these characters, but for the terror the real people must have felt, the desperation to save their families, the things they had to endure to survive. Fate isn't always kind. So thank you for opening my eyes to this tragedy Ruta Sepetys. I will share this with my students and hopefully, through literature, they will be a better generation than the ones before them. Happy reading my friends!

Glass Sword

I hate middle books. You know they are going to leave you hanging in distress for whatever character is in peril until the final book is released. Yet, you have to read them because it's what you do. This sequel to Red Queen of course does just this.  It leaves Mare kneeling before the evil king, her friends and love in chains, loved characters dead, her mission failed and of course, someone who has betrayed their cause. Spoiler? I think not. If you are a reader you could predict all these things, but it's how our intrepid bunch gets there that is the story. Mare is determined to gather the Newbloods before Maven can find and kill them. She has Cal reluctantly by her side- only because he has no place else to go. Kilorn is with her , against her will, as she can't figure out how to keep him safe.  Shade, back from the dead, using his powers to help the fight. And Maven- evil, awful, Maven- who is going to get Mare back if it is the last thing he does. He will kill whoever gets in his way. Mare has to become a leader, a teacher and a Queen. But she doesn't really want to be any of those things. She just wants to live a normal life where everyone just leaves her alone. So not going to happen. This is a great book if you enjoy Katniss, Tris or any other No Did (no damsels in distress) and their quest to make their worlds a better place for their families. It is action packed from page one to the final scene. Mare is definitely in crisis and making some less than stellar choices, but that is what the next book is for. A happily ever after- at least that 's what I'm going to tell myself until the release date. If this sounds like the book for you- start at the beginning and meet me in the middle. Happy reading my friends!

These Shallow Graves

What I love about a Jennifer Donnelly book is the historical research she does. This story is set in the late 1800's and tells the tale of a rich socialite who is on the brink of giving in to social norms. Her perfect marriage to a perfectly fine, rich boy is set. Her job will be to be the perfect hostess and wife. But Jo Montfort wants adventure. She wants to be a writer. She wants FREEDOM. When her father is found dead, she meets a cub reporter named Eddie Gallagher and her life takes a turn. She finds her self trying to figure out who killed her father. This takes her to the dark underbelly of NYC. She meets a coroner, a pickpocket and possibly the love of her life. Jo has to decide if she trusts the love she finds with Eddie or is she should pick the easy life with Bram. One huge misunderstanding sets her on a path to realize she has to follow her dreams before she can do anything else. Everything in her world is turned upside down when she finally realizes who is behind all the deaths- including her fathers. The answer shatters her and puts her life in mortal danger. Who comes to her rescue? You'll have to read and see. I am always struck reading this time period with how few rights women have had in the past. I can't imagine not being able to go out on my own, speak my mind or choose my own direction. Jo wants what everyone wants but the lengths she has to go to to have that is more than most could deal with. So to all the Jo's who have paved the way- thanks and happy reading my friends.

The Appearance of Annie Van Sinderen

Have you ever read a ghost story that never actually says the word ghost? Well, I just did. Wes is making a film for a summer school project at NYU. While taping a seance, he sees the most enchanting girl he's ever seen. She's in a 'vintage' dress, and is lurking around the edges of the room. When he and his friend Tyler realize they didn't get her release to be on film, Wes is sent on a mission to find her. He finds her, but she keeps disappearing on him. Little does he realize, she is literally disappearing. She is floating between two times, her own in 1840 and his in present day NYC. She is searching for her missing cameo from her boyfriend Hershel. Wes agrees to help her before he realizes who and what she is. This leads them on a mission to find out what happened to her and how they can set things right. It is a great story, filled with history of the Erie Canal and the problems with it being built. It is also a love story that really can't have a happy ending- or can it?? Wes, Annie and Maddie, along with Tyler and Eastin, are on a collision course with both history and time. Can they help Annie find her way before her time runs out? Much like the word ghost, the ending leaves you with more questions than answers. I will admit, I woke up in the middle of the night wondering if my theory is correct. And who doesn't love a book that makes you think? This will be for a more mature reader interested in history and intrigue. One who loves an ending that makes you wonder just a little. I thoroughly enjoyed this "Rip Van Winkle" tale and will pass it happily on to others who feel the same. Happy reading my friends! RIP Annie!

Stand Off

Meet Ryan Dean West. Don't call him Ryan. He is now a senior at Pine Mountain Academy. He is 15. He is in love with Annie Ackerman. He is getting over the death of his best friend Joey. He is now captain of the rugby team. He is not getting over the death of his best friend Joey. Oh, he also has just been assigned a freshman roommate. A twelve year old roommate named Sam Abernathy. The Abernathy is as cute as a button, highly claustrophobic, not yet in the throes of puberty, an amazing cook, and may just be well beyond his twelve years. Ryan Dean is determined NOT to befriend Sam. He will NOT talk to him. He will certainly NOT be nice to him. But if you know Ryan Dean, you know none of these NOTs will be possible. For Ryan Dean has the biggest heart of anyone you will meet and even though it was broken when Joey died, his friends will help him see his way back. This book is the sequel to Winger, which if you check out my blog, you will see that I LOVED. Ryan Dean is funny- laugh out loud at my desk during silent reading funny. He is insecure and secure at the same time. He is a leader who everyone looks up to even if he doesn't see it. He does NOT cuss. At least not out loud. He is obsessed with Annie, who is just as obsessed back. This sequel takes Ryan Dean and a cast of amazing characters through his senior year. He makes new friends, he experiences new things and he learns that maybe, just maybe, with the help of his friends, nothing terrible will happen to him. I can't recommend this series enough. It is for a more mature reader, there is lots of talk about sex, and boy things, and language, but that is what makes it feel so authentic. So if you haven't met Ryan Dean yet, start at the beginning and get your box of tissues handy. He will break your heart in only the best ways. Happy reading my friends!

Winter

It started with Cinderella, moved on to Little Red Riding Hood, lifted off with Rapunzel and comes to it's amazing conclusion with Snow White. Marissa Meyer has created the most amazingly modern series of fairy tales that will keep you on the edge of your seats. Winter is Snow White's tale. In this rendition Winter is the step-daughter of the evil Levana. (Check out her story in Fairest). Winter is a little of her rocker in a very endearing way. She refuses to use her Lunar gift and this has reeked havoc on her mind. While she means well, she has terrible visions and this messes with her grip on reality. To make her problems worse, she is stunningly beautiful and a huge threat to Levana. Winter decides to help Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, Thorne, Kai and Wolf start a rebellion to put the lost Queen Selene back on her throne. With her loyal guard Jacin, she must use all her cunning to stay out of Levana's way while convincing the people of Luna to rise up and revolt against the queen. All your favorites are back in this fourth and final volume of the Lunar Chronicles. All of them are in peril for over 800 pages. All of them are looking for their happily every after. I don't know which character I love the most. Sometimes it's the Captain's humor. Sometimes Cinder's bravery. Sometimes Winter's quirks. Sometimes Kai's steadfastness. Sometimes Wolf's loyalty. It's hard to decide. You can't start with this book, so find your way to Cinder and enjoy the journey through your childhood fairy tales. But don't think for one second these books are for a child. Clever, modern and wickedly funny, you  will never be sorry you went to the ball, ate the apple, let down your hair or took a trip through the woods to Grandma's house. No damsel's in distress here. Happy reading my friends- may you read this happily ever after.
